From Client-Specific to Industry Standard
Power’d through &Now approached me with a challenging proposition: transform their Formula 1 focused platform into a scalable white-label solution that could revolutionize fan engagement across multiple sports and events. The initial product was powerful but overly complex and too customized for a single client—Formula 1’s Access 23 program.
The opportunity was clear: redesign the platform from first principles to create an adaptable system that could deliver on Power’d’s core mission of creating persistent first-party engagement with financially meaningful outcomes for any sports organization.
The Challenge
Evolving the platform from version 2.0 to 2.1 presented several significant challenges:
- Extracting Universal Patterns – Identifying which elements of the Formula 1 implementation could be generalized across different sports verticals
- Simplifying Complexity – Reducing a feature-heavy platform with numerous user flows into an intuitive, streamlined experience
- Building for Customization – Creating a design system flexible enough to accommodate brand adaptation while maintaining consistent functionality
- Balancing Web3 Innovation – Making blockchain technology accessible to mainstream sports fans while preserving its unique benefits
The core question became: How do we transform a bespoke solution into a scalable product without losing what makes it special?
The Approach
My solution strategy centered around three interconnected workstreams:
1. Experience Streamlining
First, I conducted a comprehensive audit of the existing platform, mapping every user flow and identifying points of friction. Working closely with the Power’d team, we categorized features as:
- Core (essential to any implementation)
- Configurable (valuable but optional)
- Custom (client-specific)
This allowed us to create a streamlined user journey that focused on the most impactful interactions.
2. Design System Development
Rather than simply styling components, I developed a complete design system built around:
- Modular components with clear configuration parameters
- Consistent interaction patterns that could adapt to different sports contexts
- Theming architecture that allowed for brand adaptation without breaking functionality
3. Product Simplification
I worked with stakeholders to identify and eliminate unnecessary complexity:
- Consolidated redundant features
- Created clearer information architecture
- Simplified ticketing flows
Throughout the process, I maintained regular collaboration with developers and business stakeholders to ensure the redesigned system balanced technical feasibility with business objectives.
The Solution
The redesigned Power’d platform (v2.1) emerged as a versatile, white-label engagement engine with several key advantages:
Unified Experience Framework
The new platform provided a consistent user journey framework that could be adapted to any sport while maintaining the core value proposition of meaningful fan engagement.
Comprehensive Design System
I delivered a robust design system including:
- Component library with clear usage guidelines
- Interaction patterns and animations
- Typography and color systems with variable theming
- Layout components and responsive behaviors
Streamlined User Flows
The simplified platform featured:
- Streamlined marketplace functionality
- Simplified wallet integration
- Clear progression systems for engagement incentives
The result was a platform that maintained the innovation of blockchain technology while making it accessible to mainstream sports fans across any vertical.
Impact & Results
The redesigned platform delivered significant business outcomes for Power’d:
- Reduced Implementation Time – New client onboarding time decreased through templated components and flows
- Expanded Market Reach – Power’d could now effectively target multiple sports verticals beyond motorsports
- Development Efficiency – The new component system reduced engineering implementation time
Most importantly, the redesign positioned Power’d to scale their business model effectively, turning a successful client project into a true product offering.
Key Insights
This project reinforced several critical principles about effective product evolution:
-
Complexity is the enemy of scale – Simplifying the core experience was essential to making the platform adaptable
-
Systems outperform pages – Investing in a robust design system paid dividends in implementation speed and consistency
-
Value transcends verticals – By focusing on fundamental fan engagement patterns, we created a solution that worked across sports categories
The Power’d project demonstrates how strategic design thinking can transform a successful but limited solution into a scalable product platform with broad market potential.
